Edgar’s 69 Leads Georgia State in Final Round of Shoal Creek Invitational

  • Georgia State shot rounds of 295 and 299 on the final day of the Shoal Creek Invitational at Shoal Creek Country Club to finish in 13th place.
  • Junior Josh Edgar led the Panthers on Tuesday with rounds of 73 and 69 to finish in a tie for 26th.
  • Georgia State will open the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Sunday at The Raven in Miramar Beach, Fla.

BIRMINGHAM – Led by a final round 3-under 69 from Josh Edgar, Georgia State finished in 13th place at the Shoal Creek Invitational at Shoal Creek Country Club on Tuesday.

The Panthers shot rounds of 295 and 299 on the final day to finish at 41-over par after the schedule of the tournament was changed due to storms that came through on Sunday. The field of 15 team field included five among the top 25 in the country.

Edgar led the Panthers with a tie for 26th after shooting 73 and 69 on Tuesday to finish at 5-over par.

“I’m proud of the way we fought back after a tough opening round,” head coach Chad Wilson said. “I think the way several guys played today will give us some momentum heading into the conference tournament. We know that we played against some of the toughest competition in the country this week and if not for a tough first round, we would have finished right in the middle of the pack.”

Senior James Kyles finished in 54th place at 12-over par following rounds of 75 and 78 on Tuesday. After a morning round of 80, freshman David Li responded with a 1-under 71 to finish the 54-hole event at 14-over par and tie for 61st. Junior Egill Gunnarsson opened with a morning 73 before an after 82 to finish at 17-over par and tied for 73rd. Sophomore Owen Sertl rounded out the line-up with rounds of 74 and 81 on the final day to finish in 77th at 18-over par.

No. 24 Alabama earned a convincing 19-stroke win by finishing at 13-under par following a final round 285. No. 12 LSU finished in second place at 6-over par, with No. 15 North Florida coming in third place at 12-over par. Kentucky earned a fourth place finish at 15-over par, while UAB rounded out the top five at 17-over par.

Alabama’s Wilson Furr, ranked No. 86 in the country, earned low medalist honors at 7-under par. North Florida’s Cody Carroll finished in second-place at 5-under par, with UAB’s Murray Naysmith coming in third at 3-under par. LSU’s Philip Barbaree and Alabama’s Prescott Butler tied for fourth place at 2-under par.

Georgia State will return to the course April 21-24 for the Sun Belt Conference Championship at The Raven in Miramar Beach, Fla. With a win, the Panthers will advance to NCAA Regional play for the 15th time in program history.
