Georgia State Football: Defense Shine in Spring Game
ATLANTA — The Georgia State defense shined in the Panthers’ annual spring game as the White team defeated the Blue 54-33 at Georgia State Stadium.
Right before kickoff, the Panthers held their annual Youth Clinic on the field as more than 300 local youth participated in drills run by the GSU players and coaches.
In the scrimmage, the defense earned points for turnovers, three-and-out stops, sacks and tackles for loss.
"Are you kidding me? That’s exactly what every head coach loves to see – a defense that goes three-and-out and creates turnovers and tackles for loss," Elliott said. "Every single day, other than maybe one day this spring, our defense has really brought it, and that’s something we had to have happen."
Starting quarterback Dan Ellington played sparingly, with backups Jack Walker, a redshirt sophomore, and Swift Lyle, a redshirt freshman, seeing most of the action.
One of the standouts on offense was wide receiver Terrance Dixon, who caught two touchdown passes with a 75-yard catch and run from Jack Walker and then a 1-yard TD from Swift Lyle.
Other highlights for the offense:
83-yard touchdown run by Darius Stubbs
37-yard touchdown pass from Swift Lyle to tight end Bryson Duckworth
15 yard touchdown pass from Jack Walker to tight end Herman McCray
"It’s been a really good spring. We’ve got a great group of guys. We really have a good feeling about our players and our staff, so we are headed in the right direction," Elliott said. "Now the real works starts."
Georgia State opens the 2019 season Aug. 31 at Tennessee, while the home opener at Georgia State Stadium is Sept. 7 vs. Furman. Season tickets are on sale now by calling 404-413-4020 or visiting GeorgiaStateSports.com/tix.
