Georgia State Earns 78-58 Exhibition Win Over Georgia College

ATLANTA-Georgia State opened the 2018-19 season by defeating Georgia College 78-58 in its lone exhibition game on Thursday night, behind 26 points from senior Malik Benlevi and 17 from senior Jeff Thomas.

Georgia State trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half before Benlevi caught fire and led the Panthers back to tie the game at the half. Thomas scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half to put this one away for the Panthers, who finished the game on a 21-8 run.

Georgia State sat Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year D’Marcus Simonds, senior Devin Mitchell, and sophomore Kane Williams for Thursday’s exhibition opener. Simonds, who earned 2017-18 AP All-America Honorable Mention recognition, set a school record with 742 points scored while also leading the team in assists and steals. Mitchell earned All-Sun Belt Third Team honors last season and knocked down 98 3-pointers, just two shy of R.J. Hunter’s school record of 100.

Freshman Nelson Phillips made his Georgia State debut finishing with nine points, while redshirt-junior Damon Wilson, also making his GSU debut after two years at Pitt also finished with nine points.

Colton Collins led Georgia College with 15 points while Jordan Thomas, Desmond Mitchell-LaFlam, Justin Cave, and Kohl Roberts each scored eight points.

The regular season begins on Tuesday, Nov. 6, as Georgia State hosts East Tennessee State, an NCAA Tournament team from two years ago, at 7 p.m. at the GSU sports arena. The Panthers are coming off a Sun Belt Conference title, appearance in the NCAA Tournament and school record-tying fifth-straight winning season in 2017.
