Georgia State Tied for 11th Following Round 1 at The Invitational

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Georgia State men’s golf team shot an opening round 313 to sit in a tie for 11th place following the first day of The Invitational at The Ocean Course.
Junior Josh Edgar led the Panthers with a 5-over 77 to stand in a tie for 44th with 36 holes to play.
This marks the fourth-time in five years opening the season at the home of the 1991 Ryder Cup.
“We just made way too many big numbers today to be in the top half of the leaderboard,” head coach Chad Wilson said. “In the course of a round, we know some mistakes are going to be made, but you have to minimize those big numbers and we just couldn’t today.”
Senior James Kyles had the Panthers round of the day going standing at even par thru 15 holes before finishing with a 79 to stand in a tie for 55th. He is tied with freshman David Li who made his Georgia State debut also shooting a 79.
Senior Severin Soller opened play with a 6-over 78 and is tied for 49th entering the second round. Senior Nick Budd rounded out the line-up with an 8-over 80 and is tied for 60th.
Sophomore Owen Sertl, who is competing as an individual this week, shot also shot an 8-over 80 to stand in a tie for 60th.
SMU took the first round lead following a 1-over 289. Host College of Charleston stands in second-place at 4-over par with Maryland in third at 6-over par. James Madison, Akron and Georgia Southern are tied for fourth at 7-over par.
Maryland’s Peter Knade and SMU’s Ollie Osborne are tied for the individual lead at 2-under par. College of Charleston’s Michael Sass, Akron’s Mitchell McFarland, and James Madison’s Ben Tucker are tied for third at 1-under par.
Monday tee times will begin at 8 a.m. while the final round on Tuesday is scheduled for a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Following this week’s tournament, the Panthers will travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., Sept. 21-23, for the third annual Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club. Georgia State will serve as the host for the three-day event that includes several top 25 teams.
