Georgia State Football Preseason Practice Update

ATLANTA — It’s Week 2 of preseason camp for the Georgia State Panthers as they continue preparations for their Aug. 30 season opener.

The Panthers host Atlanta-area neighbor Kennesaw State at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Georgia State Stadium. The game will air on ESPN+.

"We’re working on the overall development of our fundamentals while getting comfortable with our schemes," head coach Shawn Elliott said after Wednesday’s practice, the Panthers’ second day in full pads. "We’re repping three teams right now, which is good early in camp, getting a lot looks, but we’ll bump that back to two soon."

The quarterback position, where the Panthers must replace two-year starter Conner Manning, remains a work in progress as the competition continues between last year’s backup Aaron Winchester and junior college transfer Dan Ellington as well as senior Jaquez Parks and redshirt freshman Jack Walker.

"I think we’ve got three or four quarterbacks who are doing a good job managing our team right now," Elliott said "We still haven’t seen a true separation of any of the three or four, but we’re still early and we’ll get that taken care of."

The running back position also graduated two key players in Glenn Smith and Kyler Neal, but the Panthers have added three highly-regarded freshmen in Destin Coates, Dawson Hill and Seth Paige, along with returnees Taz Bateman, who is coming off a knee injury, as well as Tra Barnett and Demarcus Kirk.

"Our running back position is coming along nicely with several backs doing well," Elliott said. "We’ve got to see what [the freshmen] can do early on. Find out how they’re going to step up and handle things in their protections as well as their runs and catches. We really need to see what they can do."

With four returning starters, the offensive line is taking shape, led by preseason all-conference selections Hunter Atkinson (left tackle) and Shamarious Gilmore (left guard), along with seniors Gabe Mobley (right guard) and Jamal Paxton (center).

"We’ve got a solid first group, and we’ve got three or four other guys who can rotate in there and play various positions. They’re developing nicely and getting better," Elliott said.

Season tickets for Panthers’ the six-game home schedule at GSU Stadium begin as low as $100. Single-game tickets range from $20 to $25 per game, while group ticket packages are available for groups of 10 more ranging from $10 to $15 per game.
